Identity & Breath: Breath Support Tools to Let Your True Voice Shine

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

Have you ever used a collapsible water bottle?

I did, in an attempt to be environmentally friendly, but soon realised how flimsy they can be. When water rushes in, it first fills the bottom, expanding it to its full shape. As you suck the water out, the bottle collapses completely.

Don’t be the collapsible water bottle. Just like that bottle, it's crucial to maintain stability and openness, especially when it comes to something as precious as your voice. Through breath support, you can remain open for air to pour into your body, not only creating less work for your instrument but also making the process of inhalation quicker and more efficient.

## The Power of Breath Support

Breath support is not just about singing; it's about connecting with your body, understanding its needs, and allowing your voice to flourish. It's a lifeline for every singer, and for members of the LGBTQ+ community, including trans individuals, it can be an essential tool for finding strength and confidence in their identity.

### Common Singing Challenges in the LGBTQ+ Community

Many of us face singing challenges, and these issues can be particularly relevant for the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some common problems:

#### Fatigue, Bodily Tension, & Breathy Sound

If you've experienced fatigue & tension in your body, or a breathy quality in your singing, you're not alone. These issues often stem from inadequate breath support.

#### Stamina, Endurance, & Pitch

Singing can be physically demanding, and stamina and endurance are vital for a successful performance. Additionally, maintaining pitch accuracy can be challenging without proper breath control.

## Breath Support Conditioning Exercises

To improve your singing and address these challenges, let's delve deeper into some breath support conditioning exercises. These exercises can not only enhance your vocal abilities but also empower you as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Be sure to check out the free training video below for direct guidance, and don't be afraid to reach out for a consultation!

PRO TIP #1. Posture Matters

Proper posture is the foundation of good breath support. It allows for optimal lung capacity and ensures that the breath flows freely. Here's how to achieve it:

- Stand or sit up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart.

- Keep your shoulders relaxed and avoid tension in your neck and throat.

- As you breathe or sing, maintain this posture, expanding from the ground, and supporting with the diaphragm.

PRO TIP #2. Practice Diaphragmatic Breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing is a fundamental aspect of breath support. It involves using your diaphragm to control your breath. Here's how to do it:

- Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen, just below your ribcage.

- Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your abdomen to expand while keeping your chest relatively still.

- Exhale in even pulses on the sound "tsss," engaging your abdominal muscles outward to control the release of air.

PRO TIP #3. Practice Breath Control

Breath control is crucial for maintaining a consistent flow of air while singing. To practice breath control:

- Perform slow, controlled inhalations and exhalations.

- Start by inhaling for a count of four, then exhaling for a count of four. Gradually increase the count as you become more comfortable with the exercise.

Singing Lessons in Toronto: A Sanctuary for Trans Individuals

As a trans voice teacher myself, I've witnessed the transformative impact of singing lessons, not just on vocal abilities but also on self-confidence and self-acceptance. Singing lessons can be a sanctuary for trans individuals, offering a safe space for exploration and expression.

Nonjudgmental Environment

Singing lessons are often one-on-one, providing a private and nonjudgmental space where students can explore their voices without fear of scrutiny or bias.

Personalized Approach

Trans individuals have unique vocal needs, and a skilled voice teacher can tailor their instruction to address these needs, fostering a sense of understanding and validation.

Voice as Expression

Singing is a powerful form of self-expression. For trans individuals, it can serve as a means to affirm and develop their gender identity and share their authentic selves with the world.

Building Confidence

Learning to use your voice in new ways can boost self-confidence. For trans individuals, who often face challenges related to body dysphoria, this can be especially empowering.

Supportive Mentorship

A trans voice teacher can offer mentorship and guidance beyond vocal techniques, providing emotional support and understanding.

Conclusion: Embracing Your Unique Voice

Breath support is not just about singing; it's about embracing your unique voice, both as a singer and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Through proper breath support and in-person or online singing lessons, you can find strength, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Your voice is your power – embrace it, cherish it, and share it with the world. In singing and in life, you deserve to be heard and celebrated for who you truly are.

So, whether it’s voice lessons in Toronto or anywhere else, consider them as a way to harmonize your identity, enhance your breath support, and empower yourself as a member of the LGBTQ+ community (yes trans voice lessons!).

Your journey towards self-discovery and self-acceptance begins with a single breath – a breath that can transform your life and your voice.
